Thematic workshop

"Electrode materials for energy storage systems. Supercapactors - principle of operation, types, application. Solid-state supercapacitors”

20.-23.09.2021, Sozopol, Bulgaria (Saint Thomas Vacation Complex)

ПРОЕКТ: Twinning cooperation for boosting excellence in electrochemical energy storage on the platform of supercapacitors (BIScaps)

Thematic workshop "Electrode materials for energy storage systems. Supercapacitors - principle of action, types, application. Solid State Supercapacitors" was held from 20 to 23 September 2021 in Sozopol, Bulgaria (Holiday Complex St. Thomas).

The meeting was attended by representatives of the three partner organizations of the BIScaps project - Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IEES-BAS), Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche - Institute of Advanced Technology for Energy (CNR-ITAE), Italy and Spanish National Research Council - National Coal Institute (CSIC -INCAR), Spain.

Prof. Evelina Slavcheva, Director of IEES-BAS welcomed the participants and expressed her belief that the integration of expertise and capabilities of the three research centers will allow the creation of a sustainable scientific network and increase the overall international visibility of the entire consortium in the field of supercapacitors.

The project manager Prof. Dr. Antonia Stoyanova reviewed the previous project activities and thanked for the help of the Italian and Spanish partners, as well as the Ministry of Education and Science as a funding body. She highlighted the progress of young IEES-BAS scientists in improving their knowledge in the field of energy storage via supercapacitors, as well as the acquired skills in the synthesis of electrode materials (carbon xerogel and various modifications manganese dioxide) and their structural, morphological and electrochemical characterization.

Over the next working days, leading scientists from the partner organizations gave thematic scientific lectures - Prof. Antonia Stoyanova from IEES-BAS, Dr. Francesco Lufrano and  Dr. Gaetano Squadrito from CNR-ITAE and Dr. Nataliа Rey from CSIC-INCAR. In short presentations, the young researchers reported the experimental results obtained and shared the challenges they faced during the first year of the project. Subsequent in-depth discussions on scientific, technological and organizational issues at work were very useful for achieving an exchange of experience and knowledge. The work program for the implementation of the forthcoming tasks from the next stage of the project was discussed, as well as the stay of the young Bulgarian researchers in the scientific institutions in Italy and Spain, related to the acquisition of practical experience.

The event ended with a short tour of the old town of Sozopol.

The meeting is the first of the planned for the implementation of the project "Twinning cooperation to increase excellence in electrochemical energy storage on the platform of supercapacitors (BIScaps)", funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria under the National Program "European Science Networks" (D01-286 / 07.10.2020, D01-78 / 30.03.2021).
